So Many Books

I heard Michael Crichton talking about his book Next in an interview on TV. I think I'll order it. The reviews of it I found were not all that good, but that may be because the reviewers were expecting Jurassic Park --

well, what did he say about it? Why would I want to read it?

What's with the monkey?

I did order the book but it's not here yet. I read through 10 or 15 of the 219 reviews of it on AMazon, where the reviewers were in wide disagreement -- from one measley star to four stars. from saying it was his best, to saying it was his worst, etc.
It is centered on controversial subject of genes and how the research can come to good or to worse than bad.
I gather that there is a parrot in the book that can carry on a conversation, not just repeat things, and an orangatan who can speak two languages, and a child that is half ape, half human. (That must be what the monkey is about)
When I heard Crichton talking about it, he was almost completely caught up in the subject of companies patenting genes, and how that is ridiculous and should not be allowed. How can someone "own" a gene? They think they can if they can find a way to cure a disease with it, apparently, but is it their gene? etc etc etc
